Abstract(in English) | In this study, we applied cell patterning technology using polydimethylsiloxane microfluidics to fabricate artificial neuronal networks with modular connectivity, a network topology that characterizes the mammalian cortex. Spontaneous activity of the artificial neuronal networks was recorded by fluorescence calcium imaging, and various neuronal ensemble activities were observed. Evaluation of network activity by correlation coefficients revealed that the modular patterning reduced synchrony between distant neuronal populations. Furthermore, using optogenetics technology to apply local stimulation to the artificial neuronal network, we found that evoked activity tended to be confined to the cell population at and near the point of the stimulation. These results suggest that this experimental system is useful for the functional characterization of neuronal ensembles in vitro. |
