Abstract(in English) | Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) equipped with base stations is a promising technology for efficiently enhancing coverage and capacity in future mobile communication networks, such as 5G and beyond 5G. Owing to their flexible mobil- ity, such aerial base stations (ABSs) expected to be applied in various situations, such as rapid provision of communication environment when natural disasters occur and adaptive enhancement of capacity in response to sudden traffic increase during large scale events. However, determining the optimal placement of ABSs that maximizes the communication quality of users is a challenging problem due to the high degree of freedom of three-dimensional space, complex air-to-ground channel characteristics, and the effects of inter-cell interference. This study presents a distributed ABS deployment method that maximizes the overall communication quality of users. In the proposed method, each UAV updates its position by local computation and communication with neighboring UAVs. Therefore, it can provide communication environment to users more effectively and adaptively than a centralized control approach, which requires information gathering from the whole network and has a large overhead, such as communication delays. Finally, we also discuss other research topics related to ABSs. |
