Study on design of mosaic-based 2 × 2 3-dB power splitter in the mid infrared

Abstract(in English) For the mid infrared waveband, we propose a mosaic-based 2 × 2 3-dB power splitter. By applying mosaic structure, the footprint is reduced by 10 times compared with the conventional multimode-interference-based devices. In the design process, we compared the figure of merits for optimization in order to effectively search a structure with high tolerance to diameter variation of the holes in the mosaic structure caused by fabrication imperfections. Statistical comparison with 20 results for each optimization method, the usefulness of optimization considering the multi-wavelength and multi-structure with hole diameter variation is demonstrated. The proposed device is optimized using the figure of merit whose usefulness is demonstrated in this paper. Over the wavelength range of design, 2.06?2.14 ?m, the total power of two outputs is > 91.4%, the power difference of the outputs is < 4.4%, and the phase error is within 1.4°. For a hole diameter variation of ±10 nm, the total power is > 90.5%, the power difference is < 7.5%, and the phase error is within 1.7°. The proposed device maintains its function under the diameter variation.
