| Abstract(in English) | In the course of research of linguistic landscapes at a traditional town in Nikko, a comparative study with Kobe, a port town open to foreign countries has been carried out in our research. The names of the roads on the maps along the streets are particularly different between the two areas. Compared to Kobe, where names such as “○○Street”, “△△△ Suji” and “□□ Road” are used, the main street in Nikko from JR Nikko Station to Shinkyo Bridge is not specifically named in the map on the street. It used to be called officially a part of “Nikko Kaido” or is now part of “National Route 119”. However, the area is only a very small part of the long road. In addition, in Kobe, there are scattered references to "＊＊dori(street)", which is not the name of the road but the name of the area. On the other hand, some Meiji-era publications refer to some streets as “＊＊machi（area）” in Nikko. I will consider cultural differences in terms in this paper. |
