Study on Extended Ranging and Improved Accuracy of Indoor Positioning Using 5G D2D Communications

Abstract(in English) In indoor locations where the global navigation satellite system (GNSS) cannot be used, alternative positioning methods are required. In particular, positioning methods using high-frequency communication signals are attracting attention and are expected to improve accuracy. Because such high-frequency signals have a short propagation distance and require a high density of base stations, cooperative positioning using device-to-device (D2D) communication has recently been studied to extend the positioning range. However, existing methods have a problem that the accuracy is degraded due to accumulated errors when positioning is performed between terminals. Therefore, in this paper, we propose a new cooperative positioning method that extends the positioning range by using the fifth-generation mobile communication system (5G) sidelink, and reduces the accumulated errors by using machine learning to predict the terminals with small error and then positioning them preferentially. Numerical results show that the root mean square error (RMSE) improves by about 54% compared to existing methods while maintaining the positioning success rate.
