Effects of Communication Imperfection on Operation Quality of Wireless-Controlled Industrial Robots

Abstract(in English) This paper discusses the performance of a wireless control system for industrial robots. In wireless systems, the communication can be subject to imperfections such as loss of the transmitted data or transmission delays caused mainly by congestion or error control. In such scenarios, the control and operation performance will be significantly impaired. To characterize the impact of such imperfections on the industrial robot operation, we conducted several experiments introducing wireless LAN to control a conventional industrial robot system. The operation quality is evaluated in terms of the time the operator requires to complete a given task. The obtained results show that the operation performance deteriorates when wireless control is applied instead of wired one. Furthermore, we numerically characterized the impairment of the control system performance in the case when the transmitted packets are either lost or delayed.
