A Study of Dynamic Privacy Control Method in LDP for Preserving Temporal/Spatial Intrinsic Information Value of Trajectory Data

Abstract(in English) Spatiotemporal data, including people's movement trajectories and transit points, is highly valuable for various applications, such as analyzing people's behavior in physical space and urban design. In response to this problem, data collection using Local Differential Privacy (LDP), in which privacy-protected processing is applied to one's own trajectory data at each individual's terminal before sending it to a data store, has attracted attention. However, data collected using this method cannot retain the spatial and temporal characteristics of the data before privacy-protection processing. This is because the terminal applies noise to make the entire data indistinguishable based on the specified privacy protection strength (privacy budget), making the temporal and spatial characteristics difficult to distinguish at the same time. Therefore, we propose a method of privacy protection that preserves spatial and temporal characteristics after LDP is applied. Instead of a uniform privacy budget, the proposed method aligns the privacy budget for each terminal cluster that follows a similar trajectory. This makes the data within a cluster indistinguishable, while preserving the spatial and temporal information of the trajectory and path traversed by the cluster. Experimental results show that the proposed method maintains a certain level of data availability while preserving the privacy protection of the trajectory data providers.
