An Experimental Study on Automatic Gain Control in HAPS Repeater System

Abstract(in English) High-Altitude Platform Station (HAPS) is a new mobile communication platform which enables to directly provide mobile communications services with LTE (Long Term Evolution) or 5G NR (New Radio) from stratosphere to terrestrial User Equipment (UE) by utilizing aerial vehicles in stratosphere, and it is very attractive due to its ultrawide service coverage and as a backup line of mobile communications in case of disaster. In a HAPS wireless repeater system equipped with a non-regenerative repeater station, which is one of implementations of HAPS mobile communication systems, propagation loss through feeder link between terrestrial master device and aerial remote device of the repeater system changes over time, and AGC (Automatic Gain Control) is therefore important. However, in the HAPS wireless repeater system, it is essential to consider effects of antenna rotation accompanied with a circular flight of the platform. Particularly, the effect is remarkable when using linearly polarized wave antennas for the feeder link considering internal loss of antennas. In this paper, we propose a new method which gives stable gain control of AGC under the antenna rotation and experimentally evaluate its effect.
