Phase Control Determination by Codebook Technology without CSI for Standalone-IRS

Abstract(in English) Intelligent Reflecting Surface (IRS) has gained attention from academia and industries to improve communication quality by controlling the propagation environment. IRS needs CSI (Channel State Information) to control the propagation environment. IRS cannot collect CSI owing to its passive nature, which does not allow the IRS to transmit and receive data. However, the cost of adding communication infrastructure to IRS for CSI collection can be high. To address this issue, standalone-IRS (SA-IRS) is proposed by researchers that can control the propagation environment without connecting to the communication infrastructure. However, SA-IRS does not have a method to control the propagation environment without CSI. Therefore, we propose an IRS control method using the codebook concept that can link the IRS control with a user's location. In this research, we propose an efficient SA-IRS codebook construction method to reduce the IRS control overhead. The effectiveness of the proposed method is evaluated using simulation.
