Effects of Communication Imperfection on Operation Quality of Video-Based Remote-Control of Industrial Robots

Abstract(in English) In industrial wireless systems, a remote human operator can real-time control a robot based on video acquisition. In such as system, reliable and low-latency wireless communication is highly required. In fact, any delay or packet loss that may occur can cause a significant decrease in work quality. In this work, we implemented a wireless system in which an industrial robot is monitored by a network camera and controlled based on the collected images. A network emulator was used to simulate the imperfections of the communication between the operator and the robot. Our results indicate that a small amount of packet loss and transmission delays has little effect on the control quality. However, the fluctuations in delay time cause unwanted oscillations in the robot motion, degrading thus the control quality. Furthermore, we show that the image delay has a significant impact on the work quality, and the screen freeze caused by any packet loss degrades the work quality further.
