[Short Paper] A Study on Wireless Powered Communication Protocols

Abstract(in English) In this report, we discuss communication protocols for wireless powered transmission systems with RF-Energy Harvesting (RF-EH) functionality, in which ambient radio waves are acquired as energy. In Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN), long-time operation is an important issue due to the limited battery capacity of sensor terminals and various potential applications such as infrastructure monitoring. In this report, the case where multiple sensor terminals with RF-EH function transmit data to a relay station is considered with different case of communication protocol. The following protocols are considered: Slotted ALOHA, PCEH (Point Coordination with Energy Harvesting) that is polling-based protocol, and CSMA/CA used in wireless LANs. The battery life of the sensor terminals over time and their durations under various conditions were evaluated and compared for three protocols. Simulation results show that CSMA/CA and PCEH have fairly good operation lifetime with respect to the number of sensor terminals than slotted ALOHA.
