Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) Amazing rich voice of opera singers could be acquired by developing sophisticated control of the diaphragm and chest. The detail of the control, however, is still unknown. According to some opera singers, they use a singing technique, “sasae-naosu,” meaning re-supporting breath, at the transition from high to low tones. In the present study, to examine this technique, the movements of the diaphragm and chest were analyzed using real-time magnetic resonance imaging. As a result, the diaphragm was lowered and the lung volume increased temporally at the transition from high to low tones. From changes of the lung volume, those of the lung pressure were estimated with considering compressibility of the air. The result indicated that this diaphragmatic descent could be a movement that rapidly decreases the lung pressure to a level suitable for the low tone.
