Abstract(in English) | Natural traffic jam on highways on sags is known to be mainly caused by temporal slow-down of some vehicles at a gentle uphill section and road capacity reduction caused by the slow down. It is known that Jam-Absorption Driving (JAD) is effective as a countermeasure to this type of traffic jam. JAD is a method in which vehicles behind a group of vehicles in a traffic jam intentionally slow down to reduce the density of vehicles reaching the tail end of the traffic jam. To increase the effectiveness of JAD, it is necessary to detect the likeliness of traffic jam occurrence before it actually occurs. This paper proposes a method to forecast traffic congestion by time-series forecasting using velocity information of autonomous vehicles periodically reported to a server via V2X, and starts velocity control immediately after the forecasted velocity value becomes lower than a threshold. Performance evaluation by traffic flow simulation is conducted and its results show that the proposed method largely reduces the percentage of vehicles whose average velocity is below 40km/h during congestion compared to the method that simply perform JAD without velocity forecasting. |
