Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) In second language (L2) text comprehension, the use of strategies is considered important for efficient text comprehension by readers. This study examined the extent to which the reader's correctness in guessing the meaning of unknown words, use of strategies, and vocabulary size during text comprehension contribute to performance on a text summarization task for learners of English who speak Japanese as their first language. Participants completed an unknown word semantic guessing task, a text summarization task, a vocabulary size test, and answered questionnaires about unknown word semantic guessing and metacognitive strategies. 237 participants' data were analyzed, and the results showed that performance on the text summarization task was significantly influenced by the reader's vocabulary size and the correctness of unknown word semantic guessing, as well as by the unknown word's meaning The results indicate that the use of cognitive content strategies for inference and global reading strategies for metacognitive strategies contribute to the results.
