Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) Previous studies show that computer-mediated communication would suppresses the impact of social norms and promotes equality of participation because of the lack of social cues compared to face-to-face communication. However, how avatar-mediated communication in virtual environments impacts group discussion has not been studied enough. In this study, we conducted an experiment with 64 participants in 16 groups of four of different genders and ages, and divided them into two conditions: (1) avatars with social cues in appearance, which has avatar-self appearance similarity and (2) avatars without social cues in appearance, in which the participants' gender, age, etc. are hidden. The results of the analysis of the objective balance of participation based on participant behavior and subjective balance of participation based on subjective questionnaires showed that avatars without social cues promoted equal participation compared to avatars with social cues.
