Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) Rhythm is one element of music and is composed of several beats. It has been reported that evenly spaced beats and imaginary beats can be identified by frequency analysis of electroencephalogram (EEG). However, for rhythms where the beats are not evenly spaced, it is necessary to detect each individual beats. Therefore, we hypothesized that individual beats can be detected by machine learning from EEG measured while imagining rhythms with non-evenly spaced beats. To verify our hypothesis, we conducted an experiment to measure EEG while imagining rhythms in which the beats are not evenly spaced. In the experiment, We measured the EEG of 18 participants in two conditions: with and without visual presentation of the timing of the beats. We constructed a convolutional neural network model to detect individual beats from the measured EEG. We trained this model using the presence or absence of beats in the EEG as supervisory data, and evaluated its performance. The results showed that the AUC of the model was 0.643 on average for the participants even in the condition where no visual timing was presented. This result suggests the possibility of detecting the rhythm of music from EEG by detecting individual beats.
