Earthquake Simulator by Applying Substitutional Reality

Abstract(in English) In Japan, earthquakes are a natural disaster that we cannot avoid in our daily lives. Therefore, it is important to raise awareness of disaster prevention and prepare for earthquakes on a daily basis. One way to raise awareness of disaster prevention is to use an earthquake simulator. There are mobile earthquake simulators that reproduce actual shaking using a car equipped with a vibration device and VR-based earthquake simulators in which users experience earthquake in a virtual space. However, the conventional earthquake simulators use special environments and fictitious objects, and they are not realistic. In this study, we propose a method to make users feel more realistic than the conventional earthquake simulators by applying substitute reality. The proposed method gives shaking to the video image of the user's current location and reproduce the collapse of a shelf using augmented reality technology.
