Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) Ticklishness is a sensation that we have been familiar with since childhood, but its mechanism remains largely unexplained. It has already been confirmed that we can perceive tickling in response to our own actions by delaying visual and tactile stimuli, which causes a time difference between the predicted and the actual stimuli. However, to the best of our knowledge, there are no studies in which both visual and tactile stimuli are manipulated or compared when the subjects try to tickle themselves. In addition, it has not been investigated whether the presentation of visual stimuli as if being tickled by another person’s hand or finger reduces the sense of agency of the tickling thereby making the tickling sensations stronger. In the present study, we aimed to clarify the relationship between the perceived ticklishness and the sense of agency when the motion directions of visual and tactile stimuli were reversed, or when the virtual hand was visually presented as if it were the hand of another person. Three factors, tactile stimuli from the robot hand, visual stimuli from the virtual hand, and the visual presentation position of the virtual hand, were manipulated during the investigation. The results showed that the virtual hand yielded tickling sensations more strongly when it was presented from far to near as if it were the hand of another person.
