Abstract(in Japanese) | (See Japanese page) |
Abstract(in English) | For us, working memory is an important function that is indispensable in our daily lives. Previous research has shown that the number of years of experience playing a musical instrument is associated with the function of working memory, suggesting that working memory ability may be enhanced by experience playing a musical instrument. However, the mechanisms underlying or linking these relationships have not been elucidated, and the musical component related to working memory ability has been unknown. In the present study, we investigated the relationship between musical skills (absolute pitch, relative pitch, and sight-singing), one of the musical elements, and working memory ability. Working memory ability was measured by the N-back task. The results showed that there was a significant positive correlation between some musical skills and auditory working memory. This result suggests that training of specific musical skills may effectively improve working memory ability. |
