Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) A human can pay selective attention to music or speech from various sounds. It has been reported that in a speech domain, selective attention enhances the correlation between the envelope of the speech and the EEG and also affects the spatial modulation of the alpha band. However, it is unclear how selective attention affects entrainment and spatial modulation with multiple music presentations. In this article, we hypothesized that the entrainment to the attended music is stronger than the unattended music and that spatial modulation occurs in conjunction with attention under multiple music presentations. To investigate our hypothesis, we analyzed EEG during the simultaneous presentation of two melodies. The results showed that the cross-correlation function between the EEG and the envelope of the unattended melody had a larger peak than that of the attended melody, contrary to the findings for speech. In addition, attended melodies were identified using machine learning with features extracted from alpha-band using the common spatial pattern method reflecting spatial modulation as input. As a result, we achieved an accuracy of 100% for eleven of fifteen participants. These results suggest that selective attention to music suppresses the entrainment to the melody and that spatial modulation of the alpha band occurs in conjunction with attention.
