Abstract(in English) | Mn-Al alloy films are prepared on Cr(001) single-crystalline underlayers by varying the Mn content from 50 to 72 at. %, the growth temperature from room temperature to 500 °C, and the thickness from 10 to 100 nm. The growth mechanism of Mn-Al film with high degree of L10 ordering is investigated. L10 phase is formed in the Mn-Al films with Mn compositions of 50?65 at. %. Single L10 phase is realized only at an Mn-rich composition of 58 at. %, whereas A12 and A2 phases are respectively involved at the stoichiometric composition of 50 at. % and at a more Mn-rich composition of 65 at. %. The formation of L10 phase is stabilized at the slightly Mn-rich composition. As the film thickness decreases, the degree of L10 ordering is enhanced. The result indicates that the strain caused by lattice mismatch promotes L10 ordering. As the growth temperature increases, the order degree is improved but the surface roughness increases. Therefore, it is shown that two-step formation method consisting of growth at a moderate temperature at 300 °C followed by annealing at a high temperature of 500 °C is effective in obtaining L10 phase with high order degree while keeping flat surface. Mn-Al films with L10 structure show strong perpendicular magnetic anisotropies reflecting the magnetocrystalline anisotropy. |
