[Poster Presentation] Performance Evaluation of Wireless LAN for Wireless Control of Multi-axis Robot and Study on Relay Method

Abstract(in English) Multi-axis robot arms have been introduced in many industries, but the wiring between a controller and each arm or between an arm and another one is a disadvantage in terms of mobility and durability, and it is desired to make them wireless. In order to make them wireless, the power and control lines need to be made wireless. At first, authors study using wireless LAN system which can be used in ISM band and is a commodity system for a wireless motor control. One of the challenges for controlling the multi-axis robot arms is control delay caused by wireless frame error due to propagation environment. There are a lot of studies on wireless communication between a controller and an autonomous mobile robot, but there are few studies for wireless communication between a controller and a rotating robot arm. In this study, authors evaluate performance of wireless LAN communication between the controller and a terminal on a rotating chassis. As a result, the performance does not degrade at speeds below 600rpm, which is the normal operating speed of robot arms. However, packet error rate is 100% when the chassis stops at a specific rotation angle. In this presentation authors propose a relay method using wireless LAN stations on the other robot arms. Examination results show the proposed relay method improves quality of wireless control.
