A Service Mesh Controller for Cooperative Load Balancing of Neighboring Edge Servers

Abstract(in English) Micro Service Architecture (MSA) using container virtualization technology and Kubernetes provides high scalability and agility for systems in the cloud, and is expected to be applied to edge servers in the future. However, because the scale-out limit of each edge server is small due to the limited resources available to edge servers, an overload exceeding the limit may result in degradation of processing performance and service outages. Cooperative load balancing is expected to be realized to distribute the overload to neighboring edge servers. In this paper, we propose a service mesh controller for cooperative load balancing of neighboring edge servers in edge computing systems using MSA. Our experiments show that our method reduces the average response time by 19% compared to the round-robin load balancing method while preventing overloads.
