Acceleration of local histogram generation for change detections in satellite SAR images using CPU-integrated graphics processor

Abstract(in English) This paper presents OpenCL-based parallel implementations with CPU-integrated graphics processors for change detection algorithms in multi-temporal SAR images. In this algorithm, a histogram-based statistical value is generated from each subimage, which is centered around each pixel on SAR images, to judge whether the pixel is changed or not. To reduce the computation time, the generated histogram can be reused and updated using non-overlapped pixels between subimages that have same ranges of the pixel values. In the proposed algorithm, SAR images are subdivided with many subgroups of 16 work-items, and the 16 items cooperatively compute the 16 statistical values one by one by updating the histograms until the range of pixel values is changed. We found that the CPU-integrated GPU on the Core i7 processor takes 56 seconds, which is 7.6 times faster than the 4-threaded CPU, for two ALOS-2 images with 37305x26811 pixels.
