Acceleration of Bilateral Filter by Approximating Gaussian Weight Calculation

Abstract(in English) Bilateral filter is a typical edge-preserving smoothing filter that uses a Gaussian distribution.The Gaussian distribution is the basic distribution used in image processing and is often used as weights in convolution and image processing.The Gaussian distribution can be computed by the exp function, but this computation is heavier than usual and needs to be accelerated.A typical speed-up method is to use a LUT to store the precomputed results. However, in the case of bilateral filters, the value changes depending on the pixel, so efficient table referencing is not possible.There is also the problem of the need for quantization when convolving floating point signals.In this study, we propose a method to speed up the calculation of bilateral filter weights by approximate calculation.The results of approximations using the defining equation of the exp function and polynomial approximations were compared, and it was confirmed that the approximate calculation works faster than the LUT reference.
