Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) We present summary results and discussions on three surveys of personality traits TIPI-J, interpersonal stressors, and pre-post changes in multiple intelligences, relating to study abroad programs obtained from 80 Japanese university students who completed a four-and-a-half-month online semester in 2020-2021, of which 76 sets were valid responses, together with their free-text responses about their language learning and non-language learning experiences during the same period. A path diagram was created by covariance structure analysis for the relationships between the results of the three surveys, on the one hand, and possible cognitive and behavioral changes inferred from the free-text descriptions. The results of the analysis suggest that the factors that promoted cognitive and behavioral changes were frequency of experiences of rejection by others and frequency of experiences of incomprehension in relationships with others. In addition, the same online study abroad programs tended to promote cognitive and behavioral changes mediated by activation of linguistic intelligence when the students participated in those online programs locally rather than in Japan.
