Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) This paper presents an area-efficient broadband active balun with low gain error and phase error. An ideal balun has a differential output with the same amplitude and a phase difference of 180°. However, process variations and parasitic elements degrade the gain and phase errors at high frequencies. In a previous study, a method called MPCCT (Magnitude and Phase Concurrent Correction Technique) was proposed to reduce the errors by taking the difference of differential outputs using a feedback circuit. In this study, we analyzed the MPCCT in detail, and a capacitor we added improves the common-mode rejection ratio at high frequencies. Besides, we revealed that the feedback loops in the MPCCT are available for active peaking, and the additional capacitor also improves the high-frequency gain. In addition, we devised a bias circuit configuration using a current mirror for the input of the MPCCT to obtain a good current balance without tuning. An active balun using the proposed technique was fabricated using a 180 nm CMOS process and evaluated by S-parameter measurements. The developed balun demonstrates a bandwidth of 8.0 GHz, and the gain and phase errors within the bandwidth are less than 0.33 dB and 1.36°, respectively, including the process variation. The core area is 0.0058 square millimeters, which is smaller than previous studies.
