Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) The use of normobaric hypoxia has attracted attention as an effective method of exercise therapy. However, there is a lack of knowledge on the safety and efficacy of exercise for non-athletes in a normoxic environment. In the present study, we conducted a 15-minute exercise test in a normoxic hypoxia chamber with two different oxygen concentrations (20% and 16%) for 20 healthy university students to evaluate the safety and efficiency of exercise. The exercise test consisted of walking within the upper and lower limits of the heart rate calculated using the Karvonen method. The results showed that the walking distance at 16% O2 was significantly shorter than that at 20% O2. On the other hand, there was no significant difference in the caloric expenditure during walking between 20% and 16% oxygen concentration. These results suggest that walking at 16% oxygen concentration is more efficient than walking at 20% oxygen concentration. In addition, no subject was unable to continue the exercise test at 16% O2, and no adverse events requiring medical treatment occurred. Therefore, walking at 16% O2 can be safely performed by non-athletes.
