Abstract(in English) | In coherent optical fiber transmission systems with dual-polarization multiplexing and/or mode multiplexing, efficient design of MIMO adaptive equalization requires knowledge on polarization and/or mode couplings in optical fibers. Recently, a digital coherent receiver enables us to directly measure the spread of the impulse response due to polarization mode dispersion in an optical fiber. Historically, polarization mode dispersion has been modeled by rotation of Jones vector when the carrier frequency is varied. The rotation angular velocity indicates differential group delay between polarizations and/or modes. It is not clear that the relationship between the impulse response spread and the differential group delay due to polarization mode dispersion. In this study, we numerically compare between the impulse response spread and the differential group delay due to polarization mode dispersion. Our numerical results show good agreement between their statistical properties. |
