A simple method for estimating phase functions of limit cycles by polynomial regression from time series data

Abstract(in English) Many rhythmic phenomena in the real world are mathematically modeled as limit-cycle oscillators. The phase reduction approach is useful in analyzing synchronization dynamics of weakly-perturbed limit-cycle oscillators. In the phase reduction approach, the state of an oscillator is represented by using a single variable, namely, the asymptotic phase. The function that maps the oscillator state to a phase value is called the phase function. In general, the phase functions are rarely obtained analytically and also computationally demanding. In this study, we propose a method to estimate the phase function from observed time series data. An important feature of the proposed method is that the differences of the phase between neighboring data points are used for the training and the absolute phase is not necessary except for a single point that determines the origin of the phase. The effectiveness of the proposed method is demonstrated by numerical calculations for several oscillators.
