Abstract(in English) | In recent years, there has been a growing interest in focal brain neuromodulation in a non-invasive manner for medical treatment. One non-invasive method used as an effective adjunctive therapy in walking rehabilitation for stroke patients is transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS). tDCS injects a weak electric current into the brain via electrodes attached to the scalp to modulate the cortical excitability. One potential mechanism of tDCS is providing balance in neuromodulation levels in both hemispheres to achieve coordinated motion of the lower limbs. However, estimation of the electric currents in vivo measurements has not been possible and optimization of stimulation parameters is difficult to achieve. Computational physics has been used to estimate the generated electric currents in the brain in which electric field strength and electric field component normal to the cortical surface are used as physical quantities of neuromodulation. In this study, eighteen individualized head models were used to calculate the electric fields generated from electrodes attached at various positions. Based on the electric field distributions in both hemispheres of the primary motor cortex and supplementary motor cortex related to lower limbs, we investigated effective electrode montages to maximize the electric fields at group-level considering walking rehabilitation as an ultimate goal. |
