[Tutorial Lecture] A Study on the Measurement and Estimation Methods of Rain Attenuation Characteristics in Satellite Communications Links

Abstract(in English) Rain attenuation characteristics of Ka and Ku band satellite communication links are presented using the domestic CS (19.45 GHz) and BS (11.84 GHz) signal levels observed at Osaka Electro-Communication University from 1986 to 2006 at Neyagawa, Osaka. Specifically, statistical calculation methods are introduced for yearly cumulative time percentages, worst month time percentages, and frequency scaling. Also, the prediction methods of ITU-R recommendations are explained for these statistics. The long-term cumulative time percentages of both frequency bands are in good agreement with ITU-R predictions. However, the yearly time percentages show fairly large variations, which seem to be caused by dominant rainfall types such as convective precipitation in addition to yearly rainfall.
