An Evaluation of Multipath Tunneling using P4

Abstract(in English) Recently, a multipath tunneling technique has been proposed to improve the throughput of communication over the tunnels. The previous works normally integrate tunneling and multipath communication technologies, which requires complicated signaling for both. For example, it requires two ends of communication supporting not only a multipath transport protocol such as MPTCP but also tunneling. In this work, we introduce a new approach that leverages Programming Protocol-Independent Packet Processors (P4). P4 enables programmability on a data plane of a network device; hence P4 can realize various packet handling mechanisms in an effective manner. In this work, we introduce and implement a new P4-based multipath tunneling mechanism in a wireless network. The early evaluation results show that our mechanism can achieve the throughput aggregation with acceptable Round-Trip Time (RTT) values.
