Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) The human ability to construct hierarchical structures is commonly found in the processing of symbol systems such as language, music, and mathematics. However, studies on hierarchical structures of object drawing are new to the field and thus it is still less known about the development of the ability to construct hierarchical structures during object drawing. In this study, we analyzed the drawing orders in a task of object copying in Thai preschool children (4-5-year-olds), Thai adults and Japanese adults. The interim analysis indicates that the chunking order of Thai and Japanese adults were similar. Furthermore, Thai preschoolers are capable of hierarchically chunking of the constituent parts. This is the report of an ongoing project aiming to explore the universality of hierarchy in symbol processing, and we will discuss future plans.
