Improvement of Depth of Field of Photoacoustic Microscope Images by Applying Delay and Sum Method to an Annular Array Sensor

Abstract(in English) Photoacoustic (PA) imaging has attracted much attention to observe the structure of the peripheral microvascular networks. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effects of the delay-and-sum (DAS) method on the depth of field (DOF) of the maximum amplitude projection (MAP) images using a PA imaging system equipped with a four-channel annular array sensor. A 100 ?m microtubule and human skin microvessels were imaged to measure the diameter of the subjects at different depth from the acoustic sensor. The results showed that the DAS method sharpened the subjects in the images by up to 66.7% in a depth range of ±1 mm from the geometrical focus of the acoustic sensor and was effective to improve the DOF of the photoacoustic images.
