Fundamental study of quantitative evaluation of fat ratio by photoacoustic imaging

Abstract(in English) Quantification of fat rate in liver is useful for early detection of liver disease. Photoacoustic (PA) imaging is expected for applying to evaluate fat rate in liver. To realize evaluation of fat rate, we developed handheld PA system with tunable wavelength laser. In this study, we verified the usefulness of the system for estimate fat rate by analyzing PA spectra. We acquired PA spectra of a biological sample. To estimate fat rate using photoacoustic methods, the photoacoustic signal intensity ratio between 900 nm and 1210 nm was calculated. To validate the results, we use model mice in ex vivo experiments. The photoacoustic signal intensity ratio was positively correlated with the fat area rate which was calculated by chromatic figure of mice. From these analyses, the advantage of PA spectra for evaluation of fat rate, and the feasibility of our system for early detection of fatty liver were demonstrated.
