Survey of Challenges of Next-Generation Satellite Link Communication from the Perspective of Applications

Abstract(in English) As the next generation of communications, satellite communications is expected to achieve sufficient throughput even in remote areas and over oceans. On the other hand, communication technologies and applications have changed dramatically over the past decade, with the emergence of many bandwidth-intensive and latency-sensitive applications such as video applications. Due to the large and variable propagation delay, these applications may not run properly and degrade their quality on the satellite link. In this paper, we summarize the applications and communication technologies that have changed significantly in the past few years and present the direction of research in Beyond 5G to solve the issues that may arise when we run the applications on satellite communications. We propose three directions: (1) solution for the overhead caused by end-to-end encryption protocols such as TLS and QUIC without relying on middleboxes that have been used to improve the quality of satellite communication, (2) delay-based congestion control that solves the performance degradation caused by the variation and increase of propagation delay of satellite links, and (3) application-specific control to optimize the application performance in satellite communications.
