Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) It is known that people behave more openly in cyberspace than in real space, but how communication via embodied avatars in immersive three-dimensional virtual space using head-mounted displays promotes self-disclosure has not been sufficiently investigated. In this study, we conducted an experiment with 54 pairs of participants (108 people) who dialogued using three communication media (two embodied avatars differing in their expressions of appearance similarity to the user, and a video chat). The results showed that embodied avatars promoted verbal and paralinguistic self-disclosure and reciprocity of self-disclosure more than video chat, regardless of appearance similarity to the user.
