A Study on Selective Stimulation of Peripheral Nerves by Intraepidermal Electrical Stimulation Using Nerve Modeling

Abstract(in English) In recent years, there has been a lot of interest in selective stimulation of small peripheral nerve fibers (Aδ-fiber and C-fiber) for pain research and diagnose of neuropathies. Intraepidermal electrical stimulation (IES) is one method for selective stimulation of small fibers in the epidermis. IES injects a weak and focalized current in the skin through needle electrodes. However, one challenge is determining the optimal stimulation parameters for selective stimulation, as it requires the characterization of the electrical response of the small fibers. In a previous study, we characterized pain thresholds of Aδ-fiber using a multiscale computational approach. This paper extends the computational model to C-fibers by combining electromagnetic field analysis, neural model, and synaptic model. The pain thresholds obtained from experiments were used to validate the multiscale model of C-fiber.
