Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) The number of patients due to heat-related illness has been increasing owing to the intense heat wave. Further, 50% of patients with heat-related illness in Japan are elderly (aged > 65 y), owing to an aging society. We investigated elderly patients aged > 65 y who were transported from inside buildings because of heat-related illness in the summer of 2019 and 2020. Specifically, the time course of the core temperature and sweating rate were replicated using the integrated computational techniques of multiphysics and thermoregulation under ambient conditions. A comparison between the computed and measured body temperature in each patient suggested that the thermoregulatory function, including the thermal sensation, of some patients may be significantly degraded. The computed amount of sweating in a single day did not reach the amount which cause dehydration, assuming that they spent the day at home. This finding may be useful for public awareness regarding the elderly.
