[Poster Presentation] 4-level ASK-PPM Turbo Coding System for Optical Wireless Communications

Abstract(in English) The conventional modulation schemes of turbo code systems in optical wireless communication, on-off-keying(OOK) and binary pulse position modulation(BPPM), have disadvantages such as weakness to background optical noise and poor transmission efficiency, respectively. In this paper, we propose a 4ASK-PPM system that combines the disadvantages of the conventional schemes in a way that they complement each other. In the proposed 4ASK-PPM system, the information bit and parity bit of the turbo code are modulated by BPPM and quadrature amplitude modulation (4ASK), respectively, and multiplied together for transmission. The performance of the proposed scheme is evaluated from both simulations and experiments. We evaluate the bit error rate (BER) performance of the proposed scheme in an additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channel by simulation. The results show that the proposed method can achieve BER=10^−4 with Eb/N0=4dB . We also evaluated the communication performance of the proposed method in an actual optical wireless communication channel through experiments. As a result, error-free communication was achieved using the proposed method. In addition, the effect of background noise was also evaluated experimentally: the error rate performance of OOK was severely degraded by the background noise, but the proposed 4ASK-PPM scheme was able to communicate without any effect of background noise as well as the conventional BPPM scheme. However, the proposed 4ASK-PPM scheme can achieve three times higher transmission efficiency than the BPPM scheme.
