Design and evaluation of a cross bow-tie antenna

Abstract(in English) A cross bow-tie antenna for full polarimetric ground penetrating radar (GPR), operating at 10 MHz-1.5 GHz is designed and experimentally evaluated. The antenna can switch orthogonally crossed antenna elements by using a PIN diode switch. The antenna is evaluated by transmission between a ridged horn antenna. We confirmed that the performance of the new antenna and a conventional bow-tie antenna is almost the same. We propose to introduce coefficients to correct the amplitude and phase difference between each antenna element. The correction factor is applied to data of a brass rod tilted by 45 degrees, measured in a bistatic radar configuration. The method improves the polarization characteristics. We also confirm the reflection coefficients of the rod are similar in monostatic and bistatic radar configurations. The result shows data acquired in a bistatic radar configuration can be treated as that in a monostatic radar configuration. It makes polarization analysis easier.
