Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) Bats acquire spatial information by emitting ultrasonic waves and processing the echoes from their surroundings. We have revealed the specificity and unique tactics of the simple sensing mechanism of the one-transmitting (mouth or nose), two-receiving (both ears) bat through various behavioral experiments. In this study, we scanned the head of Rhinolophus ferrumequinum using X-ray μCT system to create a 3D model. Using this 3D model, the head transfer function of the bat was measured and compared with the results of FDTD simulation. We also discussed the effect of pinna movement on ultrasonic sensing in bats.
