A note on a stochastic model and injury prediction for sumo wrestlers

Abstract(in English) In sumo wrestling, one of the martial arts, sumo wrestlers have a risk of injury due to actual bouts. Sumo wrestlers suffer from the long-term effect of the injury. Besides, the sumo loses its fun because of the increasing number of injury occurrences of sumo wrestlers. We propose a stochastic model of injury occurrences for sumo wrestlers from the viewpoint of risk management. The proposed model provides (i) the estimated probability of an injury occurrence for a sumo wrestler and (ii) the estimated number of absent sumo wrestlers due to injury in a grand sumo tournament. The model parameters are estimated from an actual data set. By statistical analysis for the data set, we also found that the injury occurrence has the random failure period and wear-out failure period, which are well-known in reliability engineering.
