Abstract(in English) | As a countermeasure against traffic congestion in sag areas, which accounts for a large portion of traffic congestion on expressways in Japan, it has been known that lane utilization balancing before the congested section is effective. In the past literature, we have studied a lane change control for lane utilization balancing to encourage autonomous vehicles in the lane with the highest traffic volume to change a lane with less traffic volume for balancing lane utilization, leading to mitigation of traffic congestion. Although it has been confirmed that this method improves the average speed of vehicles as a whole, it is not clear whether the average speed of both autonomous and manually-driven vehicles are is uniformly improved when viewed on an individual vehicle basis. Therefore, we compared and evaluated the average speed of each vehicle in various cases, such as whether they were driven automatically or manually, and whether they were running in or before the area of the congestion. Evaluation results show that there was no significant difference in the average speed of each vehicle between autonomous and manual-driven vehicles regardless they are running before and in the area of traffic congestion. |
