Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) Concentrating on operating and looking at a smartphone distracts one from attending to their surroundings. In order to explore the cognitive aspects of this problem, we investigated the effect of reading scrolling texts in the center of the visual field on stimulus detection sensitivity in the peripheral visual field. We presented texts scrolling vertically at a constant rate and requested experiment participants to read them silently. For comparison, we also presented random scrolling character strings and requested participants to view them. In addition to the central task, we required them to detect and respond to light spots appearing in one place at four eccentricities in eight directions. The result was that detection rate during the reading task decreased particularly in the upper direction, suggesting attention span in the vertical direction shrank due to the reading of scrolling texts.
