Energy Detection for M-QAM Signals

Abstract(in English) In this paper, we compare several analyses of energy detection for $M$-ary quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) signals over fading channels. Previous work has considered calculating exact detection probability for given M analytically. However, the method has significant complexity that increases as a function of $M$ and the number of samples. For this issue, we previously proposed the derivation of detection probability under additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channel with the low complexity approximation in which M is set to infinity. In this paper, we derive the detection probability under fading channel environment. For further low complexity, we also propose the approximation where the distribution of received energy is assumed to follow Gaussian distribution in addition to the approximation of M=∞. Two proposed methods and a conventional method are compared based on numerical results in several ways, such as probability density function, Kolmogorov-Smirnov distance, and detection probability. Based on these results, it is shown that the previous proposed method can always achieve high accuracy while the new proposed method can achieve reasonable performance when signal to noise ratio (SNR) is high.
