Abstract(in English) | In the early stage of the COVID-19 pandemic, panic hoarding of toilet paper occurred. In the present study, we investigated the spreading of rumors from the viewpoint of "pluralistic ignorance." Two hundred university students were asked to answer a questionnaire about their own and others' thoughts and behaviors regarding the rumor that "toilet paper will be in short supply due to the COVID-19." We prepared seven rumors including this rumor, and participants were also asked to answer content attributes and functions as well as intentions to communicate and confirm the rumors. We found that those in the state of pluralistic ignorance tend to spread the rumor without confirming its evidence. This tendency was found for all rumors that they could practice, suggesting that pluralistic ignorance is not a phenomenon that occurs in a particular situation, but is one of the human's characteristics. |
