Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) One of the major purposes of eye movements is to suppress retinal image slippages. A type of eye movement called the optokinetic response (OKR) is induced in most vertebrates when a large part of the visual field moves coherently. In goldfish, when a temporally periodic visual stimulus is given, the OKR decreases the eye velocity as if predicting the timing of directional changes in the visual stimulus. A recent study demonstrated that the cerebellum is required for the acquisition of predictive OKR (pOKR). However, some fish species (zebrafish and medaka) hardly acquire pOKR despite having almost identical cerebellar neural circuitry to goldfish. Notably it has been shown that those fish species incapable of acquiring pOKR present very short optokinetic after nystagmus (OKAN). Presently, we conducted experiments in mice which are also known to share similar cerebellar architecture with fish and primates to test the relationship between OKAN and capability of pOKR acquisition. We demonstrate that mice cannot acquire pOKR and their OKAN lasts very short.
