Abstract(in English) | Integration of multiple properties of an object is a fundamental function of the visual cortex in object recognition. Surface pattern and contour shape are thought to be crucial characteristics that contribute jointly to the recognition. We investigated the integration of surface and shape as well as their corresponding cortical representation in the intermediate-level visual area, V4, of monkeys. To examine whether V4 neurons are responsive to both surface and shape, we examined whether single V4 neurons were responsive to both natural image patches and their silhouette, wherein the former included both contour shape and surface properties, such as texture, color, and specularity, but the latter included only contour shape. Specifically, we analyzed the correlation between the spike counts responding to 105 natural image patches and their silhouette patches. The correlation coefficient across 46 neurons was 0.56 (p<0.001), suggesting the partial joint-coding of surface and shape in single V4 neurons. |
